Souceks form and Rice
Watching the game today Soucek is now clearly sitting back to allow Rice to get forward which is impacting his form in my opinion. Now I know Ride has probably been our best player so far his year but the roles that played last year suited us better. Need to play to strengths.

Would have thought the reason for Soucek's drop in form would be obvious...

Its because of the hammer of the year curse!

Are people seriously paying any attention to the drunk Noel Whelan?

From 2016-
Gordon Strachan: 'I had to move Noel Whelan into my house to stop him going to jail'
Former CCFC striker was criticised for allegedly sending a homophobic tweet this week
Noel Whelan’s former Coventry City teammates and manager have lifted the lid on the striker’s turbulent time at the Sky Blues.
The former Leeds United man came in for criticism this week after being accused of making homophobic comments on Twitter .

Whelan is alleged to have posted the comment on Twitter ahead of travelling to Brighton to watch Leeds United in action against the seaside club.

The tweet said: “Ok I’m taking a***hole insurance out for one night, this feels all wrong, sleeping back against the wall one eye open.”

But it’s not the first Whelan has been under the spotlight for his off the field antics, the most high profile of which was when the £2million signing from Leeds injured himself by kicking in a shop window in Leamington Spa in 1997.

Speaking during a charity even at the Ricoh Arena last weekend, former Sky Blues manager Gordon Strachan and former CCFC teammates Darren Huckerby and Gary McAllister told how they were left frustrated by Whelan’s “wasted talent” during his time at Coventry City in the 1990s.

Scotland manager Strachan said he had even had to move the young striker into his home in a bid to keep him on the straight and narrow - although it didn’t always go to plan.

Strachan said: “I had to take him into my house for six weeks because the police said to me ‘if he gets picked up again, he’s going to jail’.
“So I said to my wife ‘we’re having a guest’ she said ‘who is it?’ I said ‘Noel Whelan’. She said ‘Jesus’.
“He stayed with us for six weeks and I can’t thank him enough because I learned so much from Noel Whelan as a manager.
“Most problems I’ve had to deal with as a manager I dealt with, with Noel Whelan.

He’s a twat Whelan but I don’t think he is wrong. I’ll eat my hat if Rice is wearing a West Ham shirt next season.

Re: Souceks form and Rice
The tactic of Soucek going forward and rice sitting should be directly linked to the number of long balls we are having to play, which is linked to the opponents we are facing.

Yesterday it was clear we were having to hit it long as the press kept coming, and Antonio, despite his efforts, simply isn't doesn't win high balls most.of the time. Soucek should have been playing further forward from the off.

Neither of them played 90 mins in Europe thur (cameo from Soucek) so we’re rested. Coufal worked hard yesterday just didn’t make the right passes.

He looks utterly fucked same as coufal . I'd rest them for the Everton game and revert to a back 3 and bring in Fredericks and kral for that.

Re: Souceks form and Rice
Soucek, still gets forward quite a bit. The main difference is Rice goes forward more. I think the balance is ok. Problem is Soucek makes more mistakes now and the whole team are miss placing a lot of passes / booting it up the field to no one in particular. We give the ball away too much. I think we are just about managing 2 games a week, but it is reducing the quality of our performances.

Lets be fair, they’re both shit. Don’t get all the stained underpants over Rice. He’s bang average. If he cant do 90 mins without getting cramp then it just proves how shit he really is.
As for Soucek… worst Polish player I’ve ever seen.

Re: Souceks form and Rice
If you get Soucek to play further forward and if you have Rice sitting back then we're short in the midfield. He still gets in the box if he sees an opening but I don't see the point in just making him sit in the box. He had terrific a terrific season but it feels like he's been targeted as an liability by opposition every time he receives the ball in the midfield. He's absolutely huge for us at the back but personally I'd like us to find a more tehcnical and mobile alternative for the games where we dominate possession, like we did today in the 2nd half.

Re: Souceks form and Rice
Thing is Soucek isn't a "spectacular" player. He keeps things simple and he isn't going to do those surging runs Rice does so when he isn't scoring he goes unnoticed. I'd like to see a change of formation at times like today. It was clear we weren't going to pass our way through so if we had brought on say Kral Soucek and Rice could have pushed forward and we could have tried to get more balls from wide into the box.

Re: Souceks form and Rice
We’ve got quite a few options in the centre of midfield at the moment. With a resurgent Lanzini, Kral and obviously Rice and Soucek we’ve got options to mix it up.

If we are playing a 4-2-3-1 I think Rice and Soucek are nailed on but it’s nice to have the option to change it.

Re: Souceks form and Rice
I’m not sure that this analysis is right. Many of Soucek’s goals game from set pieces rather than open play.

He just seems a little jaded and last seasons efforts followed by a good run in the Euros seem to have taken a lot from him.

He will find his form again but I doubt it will be because of any tweaks between him and Rice.

Soucek is knackered, his performances in the Euor's were average not a reflection of his past season.
He's played 38 games for us and that's a lot in his first season in the PL. Then he plays every game as captain for the Czech Rep. Hardly surprising.
He needs a break.
Rice see's that he isn't making those box to box surges so he does them. Coufal also needs a break. Johnson could of played today with his energy proving a different approach.
Moyes not using his subs to change the game or give his players a break, ludicrous.again,

Re: Souceks form and Rice
Our proper form came when Soucek came in and he started scoring. It would be a shame to ignore that because his form is that bad it could end up wasted

dealcanvey 8:07 Sun Oct 3
Re: Souceks form and Rice
Soucek mains attribute is in the opposition box. We hardly see him there now for some reason.

If moyes wants rice pushing forward more then honestly having someone like lanzini next to him would be better.

They need to get this issue sorted quick as Soucek is looking nowhere near as good as he has done for us.
